On September 26, 1970, brushfires broke out in the “back country” of San Diego County. Barlay: “1970 was a particularly bad year in Southern California. The clubhouse headquarters, a place where they could care for urgently needed food and other supplies and individual helps – and maybe just a place to go to “be together.”The 1970 Laguna Fire completely annihilated 115 homes in Crest. These volunteers had been twice evacuated and returned to pitch in on the jobs that had to be done.

The Laguna fire was started by downed power lines during Santa Ana winds in the Kitchen Creek area of the Laguna Mountains in eastern San Diego County on the morning of September 26, 1970.
HUSE: Well, it was the largest brush fire at the time in California history, and burned specifically in the Sweetwater River area from east of Alpine all the way south and west, probably another 15 miles.

It was quite an extensive burn and through the area in question, Alpine, on the south side of Interstate 8. It was the third-largest wildfire in the history of California at that time, after the Santiago Canyon Fire of 1889, and the Matilija Fire of 1932. People at Crest, still among smoke and ashes, rolled up their sleeves and went to work. They swept through hills and canyons and rulal communities like a sudden and vicious blowtorch.
Forest Service. Civil Defense, too , was faced with the “explosiveness” of public response and referred offers of help to the center at Crest.
