When she questions her displacement, Rosemary responds, “We need to be taken seriously.” Upset that everyone sees her as a joke, she nevertheless convinces them to let her give the speech. Unfortunately, the hotel is overbooked, and the usual tricks (“I will call my husband!”) don’t seem to work. Pamela does not want to fly, so they drive to Houston. “You don’t seem to have any trouble expressing yourself” the other woman affirms. The focus on Alice’s experience make the episode feel communal to the viewer, especially with all the female characters we’ve seen over the course of the show—not just Bella and Gloria and Betty, but Jill and Brenda and Margaret and Flo and Audrey (the last three women of which should’ve gotten their own episodes, but you know…). The women’s conference feels like a beautiful highlight, a wonderful shining moment in this fight. By focusing on Alice, the episode of the convention is streamlined: all female protagonists show up, but as representations of their past episodes rather than bloating this one. It was also just hard to watch a convention full of women just learning and being and talking and singing. It’s a profound example of the necessity of the ERA, which would make it easier for her to escape her marriage.
We are covering thisDisney, and thus Disney+, is a family thing. But Alice’s admiration for Phyllis and detest of Gloria Steinem become reversed. Throughout the series, Alice has gone back and forth between being Phyllis’ conscience and her “ringer,” as Phyllis’ daughter once called her.
I know I’ve complained about how Mrs. America organizes its episodes by character, but “Bella” shows how good the payoff can be. The takeaway may seem to be that Phyllis Schlafly won in the end, but “Reagan” argues just as strongly that this story isn’t over yet. Why can’t we have conventions like this every year?! Her plea falls on deaf ears, and they lose every vote at the convention (even Betty Friedan speaks out in support of LGBTQ Women). This episode is called “Houston,” but it might as well be called “Alice,” or rather “That Time Alice Got High at the Women’s Convention.” I’ve often wondered how Alice’s friendship with Phyllis would develop and change over the series. Not to mention just getting together with your friends, or making a friend at the bar…anyway. When Mrs. America first debuted, much of the discussion circled around the film’s centering of Schlafly, rather than the feminist icons she opposed. I found myself wondering if her character would really act like that, if she’d actually feel guilt or frustration or discomfort with their platform.A few things complicate this matter: the woman she meets at the bar, who seems to be exactly like her—but volunteers with NOW. Unlike a lot of the other characters with their own episodes, Bella has had a clear narrative in the series before her episode.
