Determined to find out what would drive a man who had everything to end his life, Phil pretends to be a handyman and integrates himself in to the dead man's life, befriending his wife and daughter. Exhausted after endlessly spending the same day over and over in debauchery, seduction, and eventual ineffective suicide attempts, Phil changes. He also speaks in a “Greek accent” so mild and generic that Kinnear might just as well be impersonating an Israeli tailor or a Balkan terrorist. After everything Howard did, he winds up dead, anyway.

Greg Kinnear makes his debut as a director with “Phil,” an affable but profoundly bland dark comedy that depicts an existential crisis with soft philosophizing and some jokes. A New York social worker finds herself embroiled in the kidnapping of a Washington DC socialite. The film opens with one of those over-the-top ersatz suicide attempts — Phil, bearded and disheveled, in his white dentist’s coat, stands on a bridge and considers taking the leap, with “(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden” playing on the car radio — that have been a staple of coy whimsical comedies since “Harold and Maude.” We know he won’t jump, because there wouldn’t be a movie if he did.Back in the office, where Kinnear reveals his inexperience as a director by staging routine scenes of dental procedure without getting the details right (really? It’s the kind of movie that merely wants to be liked, from an actor who has recent experience starring in movies-for-the-soul such as "Heaven is For Real" and "Same Kind of Different as Me."

A man suffering from Alzheimer's embarks on a final road trip with his granddaughter. Until it doesn't, of course, which makes the ending that much more gut-punching. It’s more a problem that the jokes simply aren’t funny enough, as in two sequences built around easy gags like home repair slapstick, or interactions meant to test Phil’s chintzy Greek accent. Michael met Spiros in Greece ages ago, and his wife and family never met him, so it’s the perfect cover up to infiltrate Fisk’s family to uncover whatever mystery he believes to be waiting for him.
