A coronet is a band of white hairs around the top of the hoof (the coronet band of the hoof) that does not extend up onto the pastern. For example, if a bay horse (which has black on its lower legs) has one or more white socks, it is still a bay horse. Feathering is the presence of long, silky hairs skirting the horse's legs and feet. There may be more than one distinct facial marking and if so, will be named separately. This is the smallest of the leg markings & shows the least amount of white. Many horses have combinations of markings, such as a star and a snip, or a star and a stripe. Anywhere there is a patch of body hair or an ermine mark, there may be a dark stripe down the hoof.
