I went to see him speak at TSU in Nashville some years ago while I was in dental school at Meharry Medical College. I appreciate his message, but I come away not inspired but frustrated. Loved the book. This 2011 reprint, with a forward by his mother, who was one of 24 siblings and married at age 13 (Can that be right ? But his mother encouraged him to succeed, and Ben discovered a deep love of learning. This is the type of person we need to lead America back to our foundation. To me, this book should be required reading for all high school students, as well as all those who like to focus so much on blaming one’s circumstances and personal situation. I have mixed reviews of Ben Carson. Learning more about him, I found out that he was a world renowned neurosurgeon out of Johns Hopkins. Raised by a single Mom, he grows up without much of material things. Fair enough. But Sonya Carson convinced her son he could make something of his life, even though everything around him said otherwise. My God I loved it.
