I still strongly recommend the Reader's Digest 1983 book published in company with St. Martin's press, "The Best of James Herriot: The Favorite Stories of One of the Most Beloved Writers of Our Time" This delves into what you see on screen and says a LOT about gadgets and lifestyles that you see on the Dales. I will not be ordering any other series in this collection. This series of delightful stories continues into a fourth series. In my view, all of the 3 main cast characters come across as tired and fed-up and no wonder given the puerile content of the script. Peter Davison is pitch-perfect.

The actors seem to have lost interest in their characters; the scripts contain too many subplots per episode; and there is too much story line repetition. This is part of the series filmed in the late 1980s, with all of the charm of the original series intact. Presented with an offer he can't refuse, he has been invited t judge the dog section. James treats Tricky Woo who, according to Mrs. Pumphrey, is going completely cracker dog. But I must report that there is a strange loss of magic to this particular group. But some episodes (e.g., the one involving the artificial insemination) are engrained on my memory and it is a delight to watch them again. We would like the characters to go on eternally, like 'Star Trek' became to Science Fiction fans but in my gut feeling I think we would have been better off if they had ended it with Carol Drinkwater and the Christmas Specials that still complied with Herriot's original book.

The setting and most of the characters are the same as the 5-star first three years, but the character development and dramatic tension are missing from these adaptations (no drama of being a new vet; no improbable, amazing romance; no Tristan out at all hours--will he ever pass his exams? However, Lynda Bellingham seems to fit the part just as well as her predecessor, in fact, she is very good and one soon forgets she is a replacement! Andrew, a city bank manager, is rhapsodic about the idyllic countryside and Yorkshire Dales hospitality, and he cannot understand why James would want to change such an idyllic lifestyle until he finds himself in a rural nightmare.Harvest Sunday proves to be a trying time for the practice. I watched this show growing up I loved it so im buying it on dvd now I enjoyed the ist 3 series it wasn't until I've been watchin the 4th series that I rememberd callum buchannan and how irritating he is I found myself fast forwarding it when ever hes on he makes us scots look like dumb dumbs and all we do is highland dancing all day he puts me rite off and I dont think linda bellingham that great either shes not very convincing but ill watch and buy the reat of the series ne way
Series 4 recommended for the dedicated among us. The story lines are heavy on footage of vets arms entering animal behinds (so not for the squeamish) which largely the previous 3 series managed to do without but is perhaps an indication of the scraping of the bottom of the barrel to fill the screen with something interesting.
