For fans of their last two albums, the band has included two exceedingly Brit-pop tunes in, firstly "I Love Life" that hears their classic `get your life back together' attitude kicking back in with superb paradoxical guitar riffs, one playing some Hendrix-esque sounds, while the other going for the standard Brit-pop tune. Over a strangely EQ'd bassline, he deals in metaphors wherein the common folk are the weeds of society. The groove pauses to emphasize the point, evaporating briefly into an ambient ether before the band picks back up.The album's other spoken track is even better, revolving around a recounting of a visit to the spot where a river has been diverted under a city. Somehow, Cocker manages to conjure all of the dirt and grit of the littered sidewalks and faltering buildings without ever directly referencing them.
We Love Life won't generate five hit singles like Different Class did, but it's a more mature album, more optimistic, hence the title. Pulp's unique fusion of Morrissey desperation and early-Roxy Music retro art rock stylings put them head and shoulders above most of their high-profile British counterparts. Dear Pulp fan... -- and that's what you must be to be willing to buy this. However, their decision to collaborate with reclusive producer Scott Walker this year finally pointed them in the right direction, and 3 1/2 years after This Is Hardcore, Pulp has put out their true defining album. His personal changes are evident here, as well. Now that the year has come and gone, he seems resigned to the fact that he can never meet up with his lost loves or salvage the past.
"Weeds must be kept under control or they will destroy everything in their path," he sneers. One of the most fascinating songs we've heard in a while has to be the eight-minute long, Velvet Underground-inspired "Wickerman", using a Lou Reed-esque voice to tell a normal story with exceptional music backing it, with the track sounding like a tribute to VU's "The Murder Mystery" and "The Gift". As such, We Love Life is warm and embracing, even when it delves into darkness, never nearly as despairing as Hardcore, and nearly as affirming as Different Class.
