The UK Government will match the first £5 million of donations from the British public to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Coronavirus Appeal, International Development Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan announced today (Tuesday 14 July).Money raised from the appeal will boost the work of 14 leading British charities, helping some of the world’s most vulnerable people deal with the pandemic, especially those living in refugee camps who have escaped from warzones.Years of conflict have forced many families to flee from their homes in countries such as Syria, Yemen and South Sudan, leaving them more exposed to the virus in crowded camps. Almost £40 million was matched.Round 2 of the second phase of UK Aid Match will match 24 appeals which ran between September 2018 and August 2019.Round 3 of the second phase of UK Aid Match will match 17 appeals running between September 2019 and May 2020.The latest round of UK Aid Match, (phase 2 round 4) was announced by Baroness Sugg on the 8 July 2019 and will be open for applications between 20 August and 12 November 2019. Under the next phase of the scheme, UK Aid Match II, DFID would like to see an increase in the number and diversity of CSOs accessing UK Aid Match funding, a more diversified subsection of the public being reached by the appeals and engaged in international development, and more innovative or non-challenge fund methods being explored. CSOs use the match funding raised in the appeals to implement projects that improve the lives of some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people.
