All the characters are skilfully mapped out. As someone who splits her time between living in England and Africa, it's really no wonder that she can incorporate both culture and history so intelligently into her writing. Very good book but not for young readers.
Let’s face it, 2020 is making us long for other timelines. I lost interest in the characters and did not finish. My first book by this author and I was really impressed, will definately read her other books and would recommend to others. It read something like a fairytale with a "they all lived happily ever after" ending.
If you enjoy a light read about exotic places this book is for you. Sounds exciting, right?I devoured The Sultan's Wife in four days, which given what a slow reader I am and how every book normally takes me about three-four weeks, must be some kind of personal record.

This was one of those all-too-rare books that I raced through because I loved reading it, and was sad to finish. A bewitching novel set in 17th c., THE SULTAN’S WIFE is an engulfing ride to exotic Morocco, into the palace of the horrific Sultan Moulay Ismail and his ‘witch’ wife, Zidana.
I read it because of a recommendation. Set slightly later in the 17th Century, it's written partly in the first and partly in the third person, a tricky feat, but which Johnson carries off very well indeed.This book was well researched, and it told an interesting story, but it just wasn't my taste. And in Morocco, Sultan Moulay Ismail is concentrating his power, building an elaborate palace complex with captive labor.
Having read and enjoyed The Tenth Gift by the same author, I was looking forward to the publication of this novel.
It's deeply evocative of North Africa - the sights, the smells, the culture, but there are also great depictions of London at the time, and the court of Charles II. But I really enjoyed it in the end, and I'm glad I continued!As I read the first few chapters of this book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not. I found myself rushing through the middle, hoping to get to the exciting part... which just didn't materialize.

You feel compassion for the slavery parts. While the subject matter should be fascinating (Morocco, history, point of view of a eunuch) it just didn't engage me the way her earlier books did. In the house, workplace, or perhaps in your method can be all best place within net connections. What an excellent read! Emir means something along the lines of “holder of a duchy”.
