A Futile and Stupid Gesture includes a ragtag cast of characters, many of whom might be familiar names to comedy fans. I guess I get the impulse, because that weird scroll down of Domhnall after Domhnall was much more interesting than this movie.what a goddamn obnoxious movie that was so clearly made by men who think they're a lot more clever than they actually areI found this surprisingly great. After looking up Douglas Kenney (quote: Though almost completely unknown, this man was one of the originators of a highly popular and groundbreaking new form of comedy and satire) and reading his full biography I admit I never heard of him before, even though I watched Animal House and Caddyshack, like everybody else probably. National Lampoon's creation and its output, from stage shows, to albums, to radio shows and (of course) the magazine definitely helped kick-start Saturday Night Live, who took many of Lampoon's sketch performers and writers as members of its cast and writing crew. Like I mentioned, Forte does a great job as Doug, but the supporting cast is very strong. An old version of humorist Douglas Kenney tells the story of how he and Henry Beard parleyed their success in their campus magazine, Harvard Lampoon, into the commercial magazine, National Lampoon. Once he returns, he forces Matty to buy them out, finally giving Doug and Henry the money they deserved for making the Lampoon into a behemoth, but eventually Henry quits, feeling unhappy at everything that has transpired. It's just too bad there wasn't a small part for the real comedians from those movies, that would have been a nice addition. Nothing ever satisfied him. Wain glosses over too much on both sides due to his need to jump back and forth between Lampoon and Kenney, especially over the back third of the movie when a deeper character study was needed to show just how disturbed Kenney became. He basically ditches Henry to go on a six-month sabbatical to clear his mind and, maybe, come back to the Lampoon with renewed vigor and passion.
