It is refreshing to be reading more novels that have middle aged female characters. The New Moon's Arms. I gave it my best as Nalo Hopkinson is one of my favourite writers, and her novel, Salt Roads, is in my top 3 favourite books of all time. This one is about a women at the front edge of menopause--something I can relate to, unfortunately.

but it inexplicably fell short of the all-out love I should've felt. I rather like seeing this, even if the image is not really a prize winner. But the view from the Moon would have been stunning … Indeed, most of the people around her, including her daughter, seem to find her a trial, and Calamity's own resistant and irresolute attitude to the inevitability of age begiEngaging and breezily quick read, the first I've read by Hopkinson and won't be the last. I just know what I like and I feel I could have liked this story but it didn't seem to go anywhere. A contemporary setting that blends love,mother/daughter relationships, and other complex emotions with magical realism, It was really exciting to read a book written in the kind of language I was born in to. This book was so interesting. The bright crescent is illuminated by sunlight, but the pale disc in the crescent arms is illuminated by light bouncing back from the Earth. Calamity is a single woman in her 50s, proud, raunchy, and adventurous. I officially gave up on page 222, about three quarters of the way through.
A lot of this book is about Calamity reckoning with her decades of entrenched behaviors and seeing the necessity of change and possibility for improvement. As a child, Chastity Lambkin could “find” almost anything; a mislaid book, lost change, missing keys – all she had to do was concentrate on the item and wait for the last two fingers of her left hand to tingle.
