Before he died in 1982, Tjader urged Concord Records to sign Sanchez. The repertoire that makes up this album continues to showcase Mr Sánchez’s mastery of the Afro-Caribbean idiom with all its nuances.
We’ve seen over the last two years how the jazz community converges around the news of his unearthed recordings, but we don’t always get to see the smaller instances of influence, where another young player hears the call and follows Trane on the quest for higher musical understanding. He serves as an editor for Let the record show that Oneness of Juju founder James “Plunky” Branch fostered charismatic musical ambitions. On his first new album in seven years, GRAMMY Award-winning conguero Poncho Sanchez celebrates the life and music of the iconic saxophonist John Coltrane.
The bombastic “Blue Train” retains its powerful horn lines, but once the mambo percussion fully manifests underneath, the standard sounds more like a great salsa number than a paradigm of hard bop. But Sanchez’s influences are numerous, and Coltrane looms large in Sanchez’s pantheon alongside those pioneers. The pacing of songs also helps ringing by the changes – of pace and emotion – Mr Sánchez is able to create music that is dark and light, spirant and quiet. He is able to use the full face of the drum and with hands – with fingers and fists (even elbows) – moving with extraordinary precision he is able to beat and caress the skin of the drum, coaxing a magical array of tones and colours from it. It ended up being a short interview, but the part that stuck with me the most was at the very end. Poncho Sanchez, the master conguero, provides a window into that intimate relationship on his new record Trane’s Delight.
