Textbooks are pretty dry. The outlook of our education program has always been global, emphasizing local connections so that students understand that these issues are not just faraway problems that affect people they’ve never met. Even when they’re accurate and thoughtfully designed, they don’t engage students particularly well.
The Pulitzer Center embraced the opportunity to be an education partner on this project.

Slavery, by that account, is directly responsible for mass incarceration, for healthcare disparities and a variety of other social ills that have befallen African Americans at disparate rates. And there’s another problem: they’re meant to be authoritative and complete. Schools or school districts in Chicago; Newark, N.J.; Buffalo, N.Y., and Washington, D.C. all announced 1619 Project-related events.
The project also ignores Lincoln’s agreement with Frederick Douglass that the Constitution was, in Douglass’s words, ‘a GLORIOUS LIBERTY DOCUMENT.’ Instead, the project asserts that the United States was founded on racial slavery, an argument rejected by a majority of abolitionists and proclaimed by champions of slavery like John C. Core to the Pulitzer Center mission is an education program that connects the journalism we support to educators in K-12 and college through a series of in-school and extracurricular programs, teacher training, and curriculum design.
